Our Hybrid Paulownia tree Cotevisa 2®

paulownia cotevisa 2 - iPaulownia

is a patented interspecific clone of paulownia elongata x paulownia fortunei which has unique and outstanding growth characteristics, quality timber and strong weather resistance.

Although paulownia grows in many areas around the World NOT all paulownias are the same or suitable for every set of environmental conditions.

Our biological and agro science team have successfully produced and patented a trademark protected variety, over 10 years in development, which by far outperforms any other paulownia variety that grows within our European weather and climate conditions.

Our registered hybrid paulownia clone Cotevisa 2® is cultivated for excellent timber quality to enhance its value as a quality timber investment and paulownia plantation.

The Paulownia Crop

Plantation: Generally in spring. If temperatures don’t reach below -5ºC it is possible to plant throughout the year.

Technical cut (coppicing): Cutting the tree down to ground level during dormancy period (winter). Only when the tree reaches a minimum of 5-8cm on the base.

Selection: Choosing the straightest and quickest growing sprout after the technical cut to obtain a straight trunk development.

Prunning: For timber production, prunning on the 2º and 3º year until obtaining a clean log of 5-6 meters free of branches.

Land clearance: Only during first and second year. Paulownia tolerates intercropping.

Sprouting: Paulownia sprouts again after being cut, providing even a higher productivity. Between 5 to 6 crops for biomass with cycles of 3-4 years and 3 and 4 crops for timber production with 8-10 year cycles.

Planting density:

  • For biomass: 4×2 meters (1.200 trees per hectare)
  • For timber: 5×5 or 6×6 (400 – 300 trees per hectare)

Cropping:

  • For biomass: 3-4 year cycles (between 30 and 60 Tn at 30% humidity per hectare and year)
  • For timber: 8-10 year cycles (1.3m3 of usable wood per tree)

Agronomical aspects

Type of soil: Paulownia adapts well to all type of soil, except high waterlogging soils, with high salt concentration or high percentange of clay.

Recommended PH between 5.0 and 7.5

Fertilizing:

  • 1st year: 150 UFN
  • 2nd year: 250 UFN
  • 3rd year and subsequents: 350 UFN

Recommended subsoiling: minimum deph of 80cm.

Irrigation: Depending on area, climate and soil humidity. For humid climates irrigation is not neccesary.

Optimum water needs: 2.500m3 per hectare.

Hybrid-Paulownia-tree---iPaulowniaPaulownia is native to Southeast Asia but it is used throughout the world with a number of uses from construction to bio-fuel. Due to its speed of growth, Paulownia has become a more reliable hardwood, guaranteed to grow quickly and satisfy increasing timber demands around the world.

The Paulownia tree has deep roots, perfect for stability, making it strong and reliable and perfect for growing in areas of steep inclines where trees would not normally grow.

Due to its deep roots it also has a greater tolerance to wind, therefore allowing it to grow and flourish in areas where forests may have already failed.

The Paulownia trees are able to grow in areas that lack good quality soil and therefore perfect for reforestation and afforestation across the world; with its ease of growth, the Paulownia tree can quickly reforest an area.

Paulownia wood is practically knot free, which greatly reduces wastage and makes it a fantasitc choice for many timber buyers. Paulownia trees are disease resistant and have a high temperature resistance – making Paulownia trees almost bullet proof to the elements.

Although paulownia grows in many different areas and climate conditions, it is important to establish the purpose of the plantation together with the caring and management instructions that are dependable on your final goal. A sustainable paulownia forestry plantation which goal is to obtain fast and good quality timber requires different treatments, fertilizing, land preparation, tree spacing, amongst other things, than a paulownia plantation which is intended to obtain biomass.
